Neuro Ophthalmology is a specialized branch that deals with brain and nerve related disorders of the eyes. The eyes are actually an extension of the brain developmentally and many conditions that affect our brain or nervous system also affect our eyes.   • Optic Neuritis– It presents as a sudden decrease in vision and reduced colour perception. It occurs due to inflammation of the main nerve of the ee called the Optic nerve. It can be due to infection or autoimmune conditions. It needs urgent treatment usually with Steroid injections. It maybe an early sign of a more serious condition called Multiple sclerosis.
  • Papilloedema- This is swelling or edema of the Optic nerve due to increased intracranial pressure. Can be due to tumors, infections like meningitis or encephalitis, uncontrolled hypertension, head injury etc
  • Paralytic Squint- This is an imbalance in the 2 eyes due to loss of movement of the eye muscles due to paralysis of the nerve
  • Idiopathic Intracranial Hypertension- This is a condition affecting obese young women in which the CSF pressure within the brain rises
  • Toxic Optic neuropathy- damage to the optic nerve as a result of Toxins like alcohol,tobacco, TB medications ,etc.Timely treatment can avoid complete loss.
