Who can wear Contact Lenses?

Your eye specialist will examine your eyes to check if they are suitable for contact lenses. Except for cases of severe dry eyes, allergy, infection or certain professions where there is exposure to extreme temperatures or chemical fumes, most people can learn to wear lenses. Contact lenses are suitable for Myopia, Hypermetropia, Astigmatism, Presbyopia & Keratoconus

What are the types of Contact lenses available?

These are made of Hydrogel or silicone hydrogel. They are easy to adapt to as you can hardly feel them. Can be used as Daily, fortnightly or monthly disposable. Reusable annual lenses are also available.
Soft Contact lenses
These are made of Hydrogel or silicone hydrogel. They are easy to adapt to as you can hardly feel them. Can be used as Daily, fortnightly or monthly disposable. Reusable annual lenses are also available.
Semisoft or RGP lenses
These are rigid gas permeable lenses for higher powers, usually last for a couple of years but need a regular cleaning schedule.
Cosmetic lenses
These can be numbered or plain in different colours like blue, green, grey,hazel, etc for aesthetic purposes.
Bandage Contact lenses
For cases with epithelial defects, post Lasik/ PRK surgery.
Special customised lenses
Rose-K, Hybrid, Scleral, Miniscleral, limbal lenses for Keratoconus or irregular corneas.
Toric / Multifocal Contact lenses
For correcting astigmatism and near vision.
Prosthetic Contact lenses
For cases with scarred corneas or eyes that have been disfigured due to injury or disease, these can help to make the eye look near normal.
Myopia control/ Orthokeratology lenses
These are worn overnight to help reduce low minus powers.

How long can one wear contact lenses?

The wearing schedule for contact lenses depends on the type of lens- Daily wear or extended wear. Usually one can wear lenses for 8 to 10 hours a day. Lenses must be removed while sleeping (except Extended wear lenses). You must replace lenses at the right time according to the type.

Are there any side effects or problems in using contact lenses?

Contact lens use is usually safe if you follow the correct protocol of cleaning, disinfection and schedule of wearing.
DO NOT
- Sleep with lenses,
- Use them beyond the expiry
- Use tap water to clean lenses
DO
- Clean hands before wearing or removing lenses
- Clean your lenses and case regularly
- Remove lenses in case of irritation, redness
- Sometimes lenses can cause eye allergy, infection, abrasion, corneal edema and dryness.

Can children wear contact lenses?

Yes, contact lenses can be worn by children if properly used and cared for. Parents need to assist young kids if they have been advised lenses by the eye specialist. Older children who are active in contact sports can be taught to use lenses responsibly.
